Some experts say it can be done in weeks, not months — and the economy and public health are at stake.
Reactions: “Not persuaded by Friedman, as he rather casually throws around the mortality rates. He seems dismissive. In saying the rate may only be 1%, even though that translates to 3,000,000+ dead. And he doesn’t discuss the point of the current isolation, which is to flatten the curve. His approach won’t do that. The approach at the moment appears to be a rather lengthy period of isolation, with a massive federal economic intervention to keep displaced workers afloat until that is over. Many, many people will still get the virus, but the medical care system will be able to care for everyone (hopefully) if the impact is spread out over months rather than weeks. And that will greatly reduce mortality.” “In addition, the approach takes no consideration of transmission of the vector into vulnerable populations by those persons 'taking their chances'. To add further, When you consider 'asymptomatic' exposure potential, this strikes me as very flawed approach; a lack of symptoms of some COVID19 infected people actively shedding virus, who are asymptomatic, (an unusual characteristic of this novel virus) means that sequestered, vulnerable populations actually could be at enhanced risk, ( I would say a probable) of unintentional exposure by their family and care providers compared to a 'general shelter in place' policy.”“It is going to be much, much worse than most expect. I anticipate a mortality rate to the entire US population of 1.5%.”
