Burger King wants to make an obscure soccer team world famous
Stevenage Football Club is the soccer equivalent of the Durham Bulls. A minor league team in the world of European soccer. Stevenage is a town of 84,000 thatās 3 hours north of London.
Burger King bought the primary sponsorship of this little obscure team which came with the privilege of having the Burger King logo prominently displayed on their uniforms (okay, kits).
Now Burger King is asking fans to āturn a small team in the real world into the biggest team onlineā by offering free Burger King food for challenges done as a Stevenage player āonlineā (We all know theyāre talking about FIFA 20, even if they never mention it by name).
Theyāre taking advantage of two fundamental truths here:
1. Itās fun to root for the underdog.
2. Itās fun to get free Chicken Fries.
I canāt imagine that the sponsorship cost much and the team was automatically included in FIFA 20. So it didnāt cost much to get this going. The campaign launched simultaneously in 10 countries, with different incentives in each market.
I bet the case study video is already edited and theyāre just for the exact numbers to put in for āStevenage FC became the most popular team in the world in XX daysā and āXX million user-generated tweets of players wearing the BK logo.ā
