RESEARCH: David Oliveira
David Oliveira is a Portuguese artist who uses metal wire to create sculptures of humans and animals. After graduating from the University of Lisbon in 2008 with a focus on ceramics, Oliviera began using wire to create works that look like 2D line drawings brought to life.
His work to me echos that of Alexander Calder’s wire portraits but have a sketchier, more contemporary feel to them not unlike the initial drafts for an animation or graphic novel. The loose lines are not dissimilar to those of Derek Hess, which gives me confidence in being able to bring that aesthetic to life through wire sculpture.
