"One thing that helps is if you can find a way to not put too much anxiety into any single submission. Submitting in bulk really helps this a lot, because if you have only ONE submission out, it’s hard not to obsess over it. You send out one submission, and then when you get one rejection you are back at square one. If you have 30 stories submitted though, a rejection for one is just a scratch on the surface, not that big of a deal. I assume any given submission is a certain rejection, but that I have some chance across the board. Pessimism in specific, optimism in general" -Diabolical Plots blog, David Steffen

Diabolical Plots: The First Years
I’m in a new anthology Diabolical Plots: The First Years edited by David Steffen.
When I first submitted to them, Diabolical Plots was a fledgling market on the rise. They quickly selected my story to appear early in its run, in July 2015. It was their fifth story. I’m thrilled to see this collection and be part of their success.
Isn’t the cover beautiful? That’s an image from my story, “Not a…

Experts say Obama’s overtime rule will hit taxpayers, economy hard
MADISON, Wis. – Sold as a big raise for working Americans, the Obama administration’s new overtime rules will be disastrous for taxpayers, businesses, and nonprofits, according to a coalition of private-sector and government officials.
Initial analysis indicates Wisconsin taxpayers alone could be on the hook for hundreds of millions of dollars in public employee wage increases.

Turning Back the Clock by David Steffen
Turning Back the Clock by David Steffen Lewis checked Mary’s wrist for a pulse even as her heart stopped beating. He was too late. An ambulance was on its way, but it wouldn’t change anything. She’d insisted on a “do not resuscitate” entry in her will. All they would do was declare a time of death. He folded her hands over the bouquet of orchids and smoothed her hair out of her face. As if it…

Buy The Long List Anthology, $1
After last year's Hugo debacle, David Steffen decided to put together an anthology of stories that appeared on the 2015 Hugo long-list. The Long List is currently on sale for one dollar.
One of these is my novella, "Grand Jete," which was nominated for the Nebula Award and is one of my favorite things I've ever written. It's about robotics, Judaism, death, and ballet.
If you're intrigued, here's more information on the book:
“The Hugo Award is one of the most prestigious speculative fiction literary awards. Every year, supporting members of WorldCon nominate their favorite stories first published during the previous year to determine the top five in each category for the final Hugo Award ballot. Between the announcement of the ballot and the Hugo Award ceremony at WorldCon, these works often become the center of much attention (and contention) across fandom.
But there are more stories loved by the Hugo voters, stories on the longer nomination list that WSFS publishes after the Hugo Award ceremony at WorldCon. The Long List Anthology collects 21 tales from that nomination list, totaling almost 500 pages of fiction by writers from all corners of the world.
Within these pages you will find a mix of science fiction and fantasy, the dramatic and the lighthearted, from near future android stories to steampunk heists, too-plausible dystopias to contemporary vampire stories.”
