Another fantastic find at the Quilcene Village store. I started reading this on top of Mt. Zion.
Howarth’s narrative style is incredibly readable. He vastly broadened my understanding of the circumstances leading to the Battle of Hastings, and made it feel like a novel.
His specialty as a naval historian adds fascinating color to the difficulties of William’s crossing and the logic behind Harold’s defensive strategy. I’ll be curious to see if other historians cover this angle in future reading.
