One of my favorite TV shows of all time is NYPD Blue. Another is Deadwood. And I watched all of John From Cincinnati, even if I didn’t understand it. They were all created by David Milch. Increasingly affected by Alzheimer’s, Milch looks back on his life and career, and it’s fascinating. And the writing reads like his characters speak, showing an effusive love for language. David Milch is the ONLY person capable of adapting Faulkner to the screen. This is tremendous news, and why am I just hearing about this now? Although 'Luck' is very good, it's time for Milch to hone in his true craft of revolutionizing the period drama. Faulkner's stories should just be launching points for Milch to chart a new, historic course for television, and rescue those of us who refuse to settle for what has become an epidemic of shows that thrive on shock appeal, which while well-executed, leaves the viewer mistaking tired tactics for genuine complexity.
