Davy Knowles - What You’re Made Of
Fleetwood Mac Co-founder, “Black Magic Woman” Songwriter Peter Green Dead at 73
Peter Green, the revered guitarist who co-founded Fleetwood Mac, writing such songs as “Albatross”,” Oh, Well” and “Black Magic Woman” - the latter mostly famously recorded by Santana - has died “peacefully in his sleep,” his lawyers told the Associated Press.
Green was 73; no cause or date of death was given.
“His guitar sound and voice (are) with us forever,” Canned Heat said on Facebook.
Peter Frampton called Green “one of the most tasteful guitar players ever” in a statement on social media.
“I have always been a huge admirer of the great Peter Green,” Frampton said, “may he rest in peace.”
Green co-founded Fleetwood Mac with Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Jeremy Spencer after leaving John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers. He quickly became a legend among blues players and Paul Stanley eulogized him as “one of the absolute hierarchy of the original British Blues Greats” before naming them:
“Clapton, Page, Beck and Green.”
B.B. King once said Green had “the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats.”
Though his career was short - Green left the Mac in 1970 after three albums and suffered from mental-health issues for most of his life - he was widely respected even as he mostly renounced the music business after finding religion.
“God bless the ineffable Peter Green, one of the unsung heroes of musical integrity, innovation and spirit,” Yusuf/Cat Stevens said on social media. “When I heard he left Fleetwood Mac in 1970 to get a real life and donate his wealth to charity, he became something of a model for me.”
Yusuf went on to say “Oh, Well” and “Albatross” were “two of the best guitar rock tracks ever made;” Geezer Butler remembered Green as “one of the greats;” Brian May called him “pure, understated class;” and Johnny Marr tweeted Green was a “unique artist and a beautiful guitar player.”
Green eventually returned to a low-key solo career, making sporadic solo albums and recently recorded with Metallica’s Kirk Hammett.
“No words can describe how I feel right now,” Hammett wrote on Facebook. “Peter Green lives on through his music and his instrument. Our loss is total.”
Guitarist Davy Knowles thanked Green for paving the way for young musicians like himself.
“You were so much more than you ever got credit for,” he said.
