Recently watched The Brothers Grimm (2005), and I know literally nobody cares but I need to discuss how bizarre this movie feels.
The elevator pitch for this movie is great, the Brothers Grimm were monster hunters and they based their fairytales on their adventures.
But like, the execution is so wack ass. One of the brothers, Jake, has an origin based on Jack and the Beanstalk but he ACTUALLY got scammed. That’s uh. Not a Grimm’s Fairytale. The main villain (Snow Whites evil queen) has a bed that’s a bunch of mattresses stacked on top of each other, which is also not by the Grimms.
At times the fairytale imagery feels like it has less to do with the story and more to do with the audience being like “the thing!! I recognize that!” Like at one point there’s an old crone trying to offer an apple, but the brothers don’t see it, so how’d they base the story off of that.
I discussed it with a bff, it somehow feels like a poorly done adaptation of a graphic novel. Like the really strong visuals in some areas but painfully generic in others. It’s the pacing too somehow, may have something to do with a very underdeveloped character who suddenly was redeemed at the end.
Also the cgi is. Really bad. Like the werewolf/woodsman looks like a ps2 enemy. His transformation is actually pretty neat, as a wolf he stands up, his head snaps back and hangs limp and then the fur becomes a pelt he’s wearing, very naaldlooshii, and I’m CERTAIN i would’ve liked it better with good special effects.
I feel like this movie sustains itself by people wanting to fix it.
