He woke up the next morning and the first thing he noticed was that he was lighter.
He stretched both his arms and his wings. Sleeping on the lab floor wasn’t the best sleep he'd ever gotten, but it wasn’t the worst either.
Danny sat back on his heels with the intention of getting a better look at his wings.
He was immediately distracted when his shirt fell off and landed on the floor in front of him.
He picked it up and realized the back was ripped open.
That's right, his wings. They wouldn't fit under his shirt. They must have ripped it when they came in.
He dropped it with a sigh. It was a bummer that he ruined his shirt but at least it made sense.
He had to hold onto the waist of his jeans as he stood up to keep them from falling.
That wasn’t right.
Sure his pants were baggy, he liked them that way.
This was too much. He could fit his whole arm inside while he was wearing them.
Maybe they got stretched out in the cacoon?
Although, that didn’t explain why the bottoms were covering his feet.
There was a noise that brought Danny out of his thoughts. Something was coming and he was in the open.
He should not be this exposed. This place was too big.
He ran towards the wall to the right of the stairs. It wasn’t a very good spot to hide but it was closer to the exit.
If he was quick he could go upstairs without being seen.
He wasn’t sure which was louder, the approaching footsteps or his heartbeat against his ribcage.
“Sweetie? Are you up yet?”
He relaxed the second he heard his mom’s voice.
He wasn’t in any danger. He was just hearing her come down the stairs.
Before she came into view he leaned away from the wall.
Then he dropped a few feet back onto the floor.
He was just going to ignore that he had easily scaled a wall without thinking.
He could worry about that later.
Or maybe never.
"Hey Mom."
"There you are. What happened to your clothes?"
He looked at his bare chest and closed his wings around himself to cover up. "they fell off." He said simply.
"We can ask your Dad if he can whip something up that'll fit you and accommodate your wings."
"Just make sure it isn't a jumpsuit please."
"I'll do my best." His mom chuckled, “In the meantime, I have this.”
That's when he finally noticed she was holding an outfit for him.
“By the time I found it you had already fallen asleep.” She explained as he looked over the pajamas.
He took the pajamas but something was bugging him.
Standing next to her felt different.
She wasn't standing on the stairs, but the height difference was wrong.
Danny had yet to get taller than his mom. He'd been shorter than her his whole life.
Then it dawned on him, “I shrank too?!”
"You hadn’t noticed?" his mom asked with a wince.
He crossed his arms in a huff, "No."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Sweetie. I should’ve said something yesterday."
"It’s fine." He lied.
He knew it wouldn't have been better to know then, but it didn't stop him from being mad about it happening.
Or for not knowing sooner.
At least that explained why it took his mom so long to find something for him to wear.
These were probably tucked away in some storage container somewhere.
“I'll be right back.” He said before heading off to the laundry room to get changed.
He couldn’t quite figure out how to wear the shirt with his wings. He tried to put it on backward so the buttons would be on the back, but since he couldn't close it, it didn't stay on.
With a sigh, he remained topless.
He tried not to think too hard about how, even with the space theme and the obvious signs of age, he had no memory of these pajamas.
He hoped it was just something he forgot about because it wasn't important.
Not because it was so long ago.
His mom held out her hand for him when he came back, "Come on, let’s go get some breakfast."
He wasn’t going to take her hand at first, but then he saw how steep the stairs were.
His hand wrapped around only a few of her fingers.
Despite how much he disliked that he shrank, it was oddly nostalgic to hold hands like this.
“This reminds me of the first time I brought you down here.” His Mom said as they made their way slowly upstairs.
“Oh?” Danny asked as he put most of his focus on the stairs.
“You were so excited to see what your dad and I do down here, but as soon as you got down you wanted to go back up.” She reminisced with a laugh.
“Why did I want to leave?”
“You got scared. Can't remember what spooked you though.”
Danny didn’t respond. He vaguely remembered being afraid of the basement.
Well, what he actually remembered was Jazz helping him overcome his fear.
He wondered if maybe things would have been better if he had never gotten over it.
If he had still been afraid of the basement he wouldn’t be a moth right now.
He wouldn’t be a ghost either.
He’d still be normal.
A coward, but a normal one.
Then again, would he really rather be a coward?
“You hungry for anything specific?” His mom asked, oblivious to his internal monologuing.
It only took a second of thinking to realize, “something sweet.”
“Are we talking candy for breakfast or pancakes with extra syrup?”
“Syrup sounds good, but I'm not sure that's what I was thinking of.”
They walked into the kitchen as they continued to talk.
“Do we have any fruit?”
“There might be some in the fridge.” His mom said as she went to the cupboard for the pancake mix and a pan.
It took Danny an extra tug to open the door but he got it.
He grabbed the eggs and milk, one at a time, and brought them to his mom while trying to find something that would properly satisfy his sweet tooth.
“Mom, I'm not finding any fruit.”
His mom clicked on the stovetop as she thought, “There might be some canned ones in the cupboard over there?”
“Oh yeah, good idea,” Danny said.
He looked through the cupboard and found a few cans but none of them seemed to be what he wanted.
He was about to just grab a can at random but then he saw it.
Honey.
