The Great EZ-Up Debate
I’m following an alternately educational and cringe-worthy thread about whether EZ-Ups should be banned from use in the SCA on the grounds that, “There are other options that are easier to put up, safer in wind, handle rain better, transport easily and actually look medieval.”
I can see both sides of this debate, mostly because I am an EZ-Up owner. I take it to smaller events for day shade because it fits in my car, it’s what I have room to store in my condo, and it was purchased for me as a gift. Granted, mine is grey so it’s not that obnoxious BRIGHT BLUE that most people are vehemently against. I had originally wanted tan, but grey is what was available and so what I got. And I like it. I use it regularly where needed, and I won’t stop using it.
At the same time, I totally agree that period tents and day shades SHOULD be the end goal where possible. If you bring a modern tent or shade, then you should understand that you may be asked to set up behind the period encampments and shades to help maintain the immersive experience that the SCA strives for.
But, man. Some people are VERY sensitive about EZ-Ups.
