Okay so, longer explanation: In Certdia it’s tradition for younger siblings to grow their hair out more than their older sibling as a for of respect. Older siblings are expected more of, thus have more duties and work to do, so younger siblings growing their hair out, thus giving themselves more work (Because long hair is a lot of work, let’s be real), is seen as respectful.
it’s not as important to people who aren’t nobles, but some families still make a big deal of it. hence why Neall is doing to significantly (making it really obvious) where was there’s just a small difference between Yijun and Jian’s hair length.
