FIVE WAYS TO LOWER YOUR HOME’S HUMIDITY
There is a sweet spot on the humidity spectrum which feels good to humans. Most recommendations fall into the 60% or less range for the summer, and between 25 and 40% for the winter months. If the humidity goes too low, we have static cling, flyaway hair and itchy skin. When it swings too high, we feel colder and our skin is clammy. Everything seems sticky. And, it is harder to keep the temperature stable in your home. Here are a few simple ways to help remedy things when the dampness sets in:
1. INSTALL A DEHUMIDIFIER to pull the moisture out of the house. Whether you put in a whole-home system or simply purchase a stand-alone unit, it will help.
2. TURN ON THE ATTIC FAN to help pull the moist air out and pull drier air back in to replace it. This will only help if your home humidity is higher than the ambient humidity, but it works well under the right conditions. If you don’t have one, try opening two windows, and putting a box fan facing out in one of them to create a draft and move some air.
3. RUN YOUR HEAT OR AIR as a last resort. Choosing this method increases your power consumption more than using a fan, however the condensation will be decreased.
4. USE YOUR EXHAUST FAN while showering to pull the moisture out of the house as soon as it is released. Lowering the temperature of your water will also help as cooler water doesn’t put off as much steam. A shorter shower will also help. However, even if you need a long, hot shower or bath, run that fan to offset the price of your luxurious relaxation. If your fan is obnoxiously loud, get a replacement. Today’s models are so quiet you won’t even know they are running.
5. USE THE HOOD VENT FAN when you prepare meals to remove any steam coming from your pots. Learn to cover your foods to also maintain a lower humidity kitchen. Use your oven, or even the grill. Cooking outside is the best solution if you can do so.
There are a few other general items that you should check off while doing your home maintenance this spring. Be sure that the dryer is attached to the vent pipe, and also that when the dryer is running, you are feeling the heat at the exit point of the home. If not, your pipe may be lint-clogged.
Be sure that your vents actually do vent outside. It won’t do any good to use a ventless fan over the stove to attempt to remove moisture, as it simply stirs the air around.
Also, while doing your home improvements, proper insulation and moisture barriers will make a big difference in the overall performance of your home systems. Your furnace will heat better, your A/C will cool more efficiently, and both will be more stable. You will feel a higher level of comfort while saving money at the same time. That is a win no matter how you look at it.
