Some of my favourite quotes from the last book of the morganville vampires series
Jace’s blood, by all logic, should have killed Simon.
I genuinely don’t understand “Daylighters”. They make absolutely no sense in how they are created. Why in the world, with what kind of twisted logic, would strong angelic blood help or aid vampires...?
Everything holy harms vampires. Symbols of religion hurt vampires. Holy water burns vampires. Shadowhunters’ angelic weapons harm vampires.
So, quite obviously, should the Nephilims’ blood in general harm vampires - like, give them the vampire-equivalent of indigestion.
But angelic blood that is as strong and pure as Jace’s...? Should have burnt straight through Simon’s throat and kill him, because it’s literally extra holy.
By the rules set out in this world, that everything holy harms vampires, the blood of an Angel, whether the pure or the “watered down” version of the Nephilim, should harm vampires.
Not to mention the logical defense mechanism of Angels’ blood being poisonous for demonic predators like vampires. It’s be a very natural defense mechanism and especially considering the fact that everything else - literally everything else, may it be Witchlight or angelic weapons or holy objects - hurts vampires, why would angelic blood do anything but harm?
And not only can they just digest angelic blood, no the angelic blood does them a favor. If it would, say completely heal a vampire from being a vampire and reverse the effect, okay maybe I could buy that.
But no. Vampires get to keep their super strength and their general vampire-ness but they are rewarded by losing the one pesky thing being a vampire brings along; burning in the sun.
Now, again, my question, by what logic does something with all of the properties to harm or kill a vampire, actually give them an upgrade and make life easier for them...?
(Please refrain from replying with ‘you shouldn’t look for logic in TMI *lol*’. World-buildhing has to be coherent. You can’t just entirely flip the very clear and easy rules you set out just because it now becomes more fun. Even to a rule-inversion there has to be a certain logic. All writing needs to have a logic within the world it creates.)
random thought, but. clary and jace’s weird super special angel blood is completely new and one-of-a-kind, right? because valentine made them through dodgy experiments and shit.
and simon got his daylighter powers from drinking jace’s blood (because apparently juiced up-angel blood = sunlight powers??)
but there were already legends about daylighters, right? i mean part of what they said was like “one day a daylighter will come and be a great leader” which could be interpreted as prophecy... as in, one day daylighters will exist... but i’m pretty sure they mentioned he was the first in hundreds of years, as well, implying there were more.
so... how were other daylighters made? it can’t just be special golden angel blood, because clary and jace are supposedly one-of-a-kind (although if they aren’t, that raises some other interesting questions). so there’s got to be another way, right?
i wonder what it could possibly be... i wonder if it could happen again during canon time. (obviously it’s not going to happen in canon, i just wonder if it would be possible.)
Okay so since I’ve never read the books, what exactly is a daylighter? Like I knew weeks ago that Simon would become one because people were bringing it up but I still have no clue what it actually is. My guess is just that it’s a vampire who can go out in daylight kinda like in The Originals except daylighters don’t need a special ring.
Currently reading (book 78 of the year)
In all honesty I have been procrastinating reading this for a month or so because I really don’t want the series to end for me
What are the last names of the Nocturns? Or is that secret for a reason?
Shelby: Going to be honest – I never wrote last names for the Nocturns. I’m sure they have them, but for whatever reason the necessity never arose to create them. Last names are definitely more important to the Daylighters, because they establish their family history and “belonging” in the city. I like to think that many Nocturn families re-invented their last names, much like how they’ve chosen much more creative first names to the Daylighter’s “traditional” ones. Daylighters have a cultural fixation on re-establishing life as close to “what it was before the disasters,” while the Nocturns know they’re living in “the future.”
This being said, if anyone wants to suggest last names for any of the Nocturns, we could totally establish some new canon material. :)
Danny: Also, if you go to www.cityofhorizon.com and look around you’ll find quite a few names of people that live in the city and work for the government. I came up with all of these and EVERY SINGLE name has meaning. I have a master list on my computer and everything. Consider this a challenge. Some are easy to figure out, some are practically impossible. If you can guess what they are then… then… uh… gosh I have no idea what to give you in return. There has got to be some kind of prize right? Hmmm… if you all can come up with something that you want (within reason) in exchange for guessing the names, then I’ll try to make it happen.
