#dayofthedead Favorite holiday of the year. In the mid 1980’s, dear friends, Glen Santiago and his husband, John Hoge, transform their studio apartment into a #dayof thedead #altar on 16th St. near Fifth Avenue for the month of November. It was a blast to see your favorite people in the City. That extra support to grieve our loved ones dying from #AIDS, with loved ones that were still with us, saved many a life. Like anything truly spectacular, Glen and John moved to a bigger space near Tompkins Square Park in the east village. The event got more popular and became the-downtown-must-attend-event of the fall. There were no invitations, no flyers, you just had to know someone. It was like a speak easy, but legal. People came to laugh, cry, eat, dance, leave pictures of their loved ones on the altar. It was a sublime place to celebrate life and death at the same time. Decades later, after many police visits, Glen and John looked around their packed apartment and didn’t recognize anyone they knew. They decided to put the beloved event on hold. Fortunately some of the core group have migrated to the #hudsonvalleyny with our families. Tonight Glen and John transformed their first floor into a #day of the dead altar. It had that magical feeling of almost 40 years ago when we first gathered. The #love and #grief still flow.
