It's difficult for me to look at the all-female roster on the new Joker's Daughter book and not feel like DC is wedging a bunch of women onto a really bad book purposefully
Joker's Daughter is the biggest strawman feminist character I've ever seen in fiction, her entire ~origin story~ is this bizarre grimdark mess of trivialized self-harm and "not wanting to be pretty", she wears a shirt that says "Daddy's GRRRL" and she has the worst character design I've seen in a while
and Ann Nocenti wrote it with this whole plot of her ~freeing the poor women~ from their horrible male slave-driver community in the Gotham sewers
and I guess adding all those things together = feminism??!?!??!
please shitcan this character goddamn
lookin at the new comic releases online (I don't even know if we got our shipment today because of the snow hmm)
and man
have we really stooped to marketing Harley Quinn with how she and Ivy are "going to rescue a bunch of cute puppies and kitties! "
like
are you trying to market to children? are you trying to infantilize the character? or do you just think female comic readers will only be attracted to your tits and ass derby outfit redux of their old-time favorite if you lure them in with fluffy baby animals? oh, and just the extra dash of pinkish(?) blood, because let's not forget, Harley is this cute Hot Topic-chic lady now
I'm probably just being extra annoyed because I have an impending sinus headache but like
come on
so Ann Nocenti's writing Catwoman, right
(she writes Katana and is responsible for Joker's Daughter, who is now the Catwoman villain, and her writing is generally the worst thing I've ever seen, without exaggeration)
but man
you know just how bad that shit is
I flipped through the latest issue and Catwoman is calling Duela pathetic
because her weakness is her love of her cat that Selena's holding hostage
Catwoman is ridiculing someone for caring about a cat
I hate comics and I've given up hope on the world
Marvel definitely has their faults (what is this "must read every tie-in of Infinity to remotely understand it" shit) but man
call me back when DC is doing some slightly over bare-minimum "we gotta be politically correct" stuff, when they understand that it's not just a bullshit sales quota to be met and let their creatives have some leeway
like introducing four solo female titles next year, one of which gives a teenage Pakistani-American girl a well known hero's moniker
or like.. Marvel recently introduced a dude of color as bi in one of their best (imo) ongoing series
the last time I remember a queer poc being introduced/written believably and passionately with DC was with Renee Montoya in Gotham Central and OOPS she's kind of NOT IN THE NEW 52 AT ALL
but her ex-girlfriend is
oops wait but she's Bruce Wayne's cousin now and she can't get married
huff
Ps I totally appreciate the new writer being an apparently gay dude who thinks Batwoman’s marriage is unnecessary because we can’t get married everywhere in the US and don’t know what State that Gotham is in anyway???
Thanks guy you really get it wow
Admittedly I probably take it fairly personally
But the new Batwoman really pales in comparison to the old creative team's work and I'm kind of hurt by how they think tying everything in with Batman somehow makes it better.
Who needs beautifully written lesbian characters when you can have ~grimdark~ Batman tie-ins, right
lol they're tying Batwoman in to Batman: Zero Year
color me immediately disinterested
though tbh I was immediately disinterested when Batman showed up
