Experiment with Hagi pottery from Meizengama 明善窯の萩焼で新作の可能性を探る
Today was Ilana’s last studio day at DCA Print Studio. She went through an intensive production process as well as some new experimental process with a piece of Hagi pottery from Meizengama in Yamaguchi. Hagi is known as an ancient volcanic area, notably through an ‘independent group of monogenetic volcanoes in Abu’. There are over 40 old monogenetic volcanoes in the area and is one of the national Geopark sites in Japan. Volcanic lava has paved Hagi’s cultural landscape, including Hagi pottery which has over 400 years of history. Hagi pottery mainly uses two types of earth for base clay - Daido (white-ish) and Mishima (red-ish). And for the glaze, at our collaborator Hagi pottery studio Meizengama, they use a glaze containing silica, which is actually a familiar mineral for Ilana to collaborate with. We will bring the result of this experiment to Yamaguchi and continue our dialogues on Hagi materials and volcanic geological/cultural process. Our warmest gratitude goes to the whole team at DCA Print Studio - namely Annis, Judith and Claire - we couldn’t have made Ilana’s new body of works without your support and expertise! 今日はDCA版画工房におけるイラナの最後の作品制作日でした。更に作業を進めるとともに山口の明善窯の萩焼で新しい作品の制作が可能かどうかを試したりしました。 萩は「阿武火山群（あぶかざんぐん）」と呼ばれる40以上ある独立単性火山群で知られる古代からの火山地域で、日本ジオパークにも認定されています。火山活動やマグマがこの土地の土台だけでなく萩焼を含む地域の文化を作っています。萩焼は400年以上の歴史を持つと言われ多くの場合白っぽい大道土と赤っぽい見島土が使われます。今回プロジェクトでお世話になっている「明善窯」では使用する釉薬にシリカが含まれていて − このシリカはイラナにとって馴染みのある鉱物だったり、、ここでの実験結果は山口に持って行き、素材との対話や火山地域である萩についての理解をさらに深める予定です。 DCA版画工房、アニス、ジュディス、クレア、の温かく献身的なサポートがなければイラナの作品制作は不可能でした。この場をお借りして再びお礼申し上げます。ありがとうございました！
