New Year

Only one thought is present in my mind

I am alive

I’m really alive.

Somehow, despite it all, I’ve made it.

Each rush of air leaving my body

Serves as a constant reminder

As my heart continues to pound within my chest

Warming me, supporting me

So many have tried to kill me

Even myself

But despite their hatred

Despite my weak heart (it’s a condition)

I’m alive.

No one else has ever tried to save me

I’ve always been alone in protecting myself

And in spite of them, I survived

Not only do I survive, I thrive

I am alive

I may be alone

And terrified of what a new friend may bring

I may be broken

And unable to touch another human being

But I am alive

In spite of it all, I am alive

I am alive

Somehow, in 2018

I survived the winter of my highschool years

I survived the harsh stares of my peers

I survived the painful words and their due sneers

I survived the isolation, though it was my greatest fear

I survived, and with caution, I beckon in the new year.
