This ridge is the divide between the Crooked River and the Deschutes river. They now commingle in Lake Billy Chinook, but were once separated by this ridge and ran parallel for many miles. The low spot in the ridge is a current pass where the road connects fingers of the lake. It is thought that at one point the crooked may have flowed into the Deschutes here, long before the river bed eroded down to its new level hundreds of feet below the rim, and now beneath the lake.
