By 8 AM it is all over the radio. “It is no joke. It is a real war” a radio announcer’s call to NBC is translated over the static, calling in from the KTU radio station in Honolulu. “There has been serious fighting going on in the air and in the sea...We cannot estimate just how much damage has been done, but it has been a very severe attack.”
2,000 casualties and counting. Battleships and planes sunk. She’d recieved the call that the children were to stay home from school. Maria makes sure the children are occupied with coloring books and a board game so they aren’t watching television ( the breaking news is on every channel ) before she slowly ascends the stairs to wake up the sleeping marine.
“Frank...” she touches his shoulder gently. He looks so peaceful amidst cloud colored sheets. If she let him sleep he’d stay out of this war just a little bit longer. Safe and home.
“Frank -- there’s been a bombing in Hawaii.”
