It seemed oddly appropriate to begin posting my notebook today of all days in the year, in order that it may share a birthday with the Grandmother of gothic, Mary Wollestonecraft Shelley.
Born 225 years ago today*, our favoured female is oft considered the creator (or, at least, the instigator) of science fiction. But should you delve deeper than the monster she created, you'll soon discover a fascinating complexity to Mary's life and works.
Perhaps consider renting the 2017 biopic as an introduction, or if you're in the mood for something lurid, the seemingly forgotten Gothic (1984) which purports to tell the story of the night which inspired young Mary to create Frankenstein.
However, or even whether, you celebrate this day, I, at least, raise a toast in gratitude to you for reading my very first entry in my digital notebook, and trust you may enjoy the many more to come.
* Alas, the mind wanders and carried me through the witching hour. Therefore I ought to correct my initial inaccuracy. Mary Shelley came into this world on August 30th, 1797, not August 31st!
