Also, because men can be feminists too, this year saw the passing of director Jonathan Demme, who did so many strong-female-led films, including Silence of the Lambs and Rachel Getting Married. Iron-Jawed Angels is an inspiring film focusing on suffragettes Alice Paul and Lucy Burns, overcoming major uphill battles to get the 19th amendment passed. Psst, see this movie now! Zora Neale Hurston, who wrote Their Eyes were Watching God. RIP Princess Leia. Shirley Chisolm (she ran for federal office back in the 70s). Foss's life loosely inspired a series of stories written for the Saturday Evening Post by Norman Reilly Raine. The main character, Tugboat Annie, is a tough little skipper from Secoma (Seattle plus Tacoma). The stories—more than sixty were published from the 1930s to the 1960s—pit Annie against male chauvinists who think "that managing a towing and salvage company is a man's job." Time and again she proves them wrong, overcoming nasty tricks with quick thinking and a forceful personality, providing laughs along the way.

After the death of her father, al-Fihri vowed to spend her entire inheritance on building a mosque—which, as the cornerstone of the community, was both a place of worship and a center of learning. In 859 she founded al-Qarawiyyan which operated in a way similar to a modern university. Al-Qarawiyyan offered courses in grammar, rhetoric, logic, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, history, geography, and music—creating well-rounded scholars and attracting brilliant minds from around the world. Notably, women were not allowed to attend. One the largest mosques in Africa and an educational center of the Islamic world, al-Qarawiyyin is considered the oldest university still in operation.
