I just chanced on a song of Howard's entitled "Dead Radio", and wow, that man was a genius! I hear good lyrics often, because lyrics matter a lot to me, but Howard leaves me in awe.

One thing about Howard: He is too complex to label. While Nick Cave might be described as essentially goth, Howard straddles post-punk and many other labels, without fitting any of them. He is far too ironic to be emo, even though he delves into melancholy themes. The man was his own genre.
