Review: Dead Funny starring Steve Pemberton
Well, well, well… what do I say about Dead Funny..? Ummm… well…
It was Dead Funny! Super hilarious! I was pretty much wetting myself all the way through. I loved it so much, too much in-fact, I saw it twice!
With an All-Star Cast which is pretty rare – it was a spectacular show! I couldn’t adore it more! The first time I saw it was in December (2016) and Katherine Parkinson was ill, so her understudy, Victoria Blunt, did a marvellous job considering she didn’t attend any rehearsals with the main cast before that afternoon. And when I saw it for the second time around, I think Katherine was just as good as Victoria or even a little bit better.
Steve Pemberton, as one of my favourite actors, was a fantastic Brian, incredibly heart-felt and did a wonderful impression of Benny Hill! His comedy timing, as usual, was absolutely spot-on!
Rufus Jones and Ralf Little are a crack team! Whilst Emily Berrington is a wonderful underrated actress that really shone through!
I was really excited for this show because (apart from Ralf Little) I’ve seen every cast member in a television show or a film and I had very high hopes! Terry Johnson’s writing is brilliant and his work needs to be celebrated and worked on more often on stage.
The play is filled with high emotional drama and with a couple of twists in the relationships within the characters, this holds up a mirror to 90s Society, showing how we can hide the real truth and conveying it with a mask of nonsense, much like a joke.
We are taught that sometimes the fun must stop and we all must face our problems head on, yet, you should still keep that light in the darkness with a bit of nudity and silly old food fight.
Dead Funny was probably one of the best shows on in London’s West End this winter, it’s a shame they didn’t win many awards for it.
I really wish they do a Tour of Dead Funny! I think it’ll be wonderful!
Everyone apart of this production did a grand job! Well Done to you all!
