I knew the song Single Ladies but I had no idea who the artist was/didn't bother looking at anything else she'd written. My best friend, however, was obsessed with Lady Gaga so I got a copy of The Fame Monster shortly after it came out. When the music video was released I was like "who is this black chick" and that's how I finally made the connection.
