Deaf Sentence by David Lodge My rating: 3 of 5 stars I'm not sure how to qulify this book tbh. The beginning was a bit disapointing, as the whole thing spent too much time (imo) with Crazy Groupie!Alex, and the subplot ended up not going anywhere interesting... in fact, the parts D. Lodge describes as fictional in his acknowledgement left me feeling mostly bored and tired--as did the change of narration (going from 3rd to 1st person at times). those are supposedly due to the MC "amusing himself" by writing stuff about his life in 3rd person narrative but it mostly reads like Lodge couldn't decide on a style and decided to mix them. Not the best decision imo. I feel, for a book called Deaf sentence, it didn't talk all that much about Desmond's experiences with growing deaf, although it was sprinkled throughout the book--and frankly those parts where what interested me most. The last leg of the story (from the trip to Poland onward) caught me by surprise--maybe because death is a theme that gets me--but in a good way. You could tell there's a lot more feeling in this part (inspired by the author's own life) than in the needless (and weird & somewhat sexist at time) '[former] prof. seduced by student' plotline'. It's a pitty I couldn't find that through the entire book, but I'm still giving it three stars for it. View all my reviews
