Athletics - Results. Day 7, Thursday 1st August. Sofia, Bulgaria

Athletics

John Ruddy ran two seasons bests in the 200m qualifying heats as he secured his place in the Semi Finals. His time of 22.67 seconds was good enough to see him into the next round on the competition, which will be held this morning at the Vasil Levski Stadium.

Although she had to pull out of yesterday’s 800m race due to injury, Lauren Peffers was presented with the silver medal that she won in the 400m on day 6. 

This is not the first time Lauren has found herself on the podium, after also collecting medals at the 2005 and 2009 Deaflympics.

Lauren reveled the pain that she endured on course to her second place finish, as she picked up her injury during the event. "When I got off to a great start, I felt sharp pains. So I just went for it. I ran around in the fastest time possible to overcome the injury."

Amongst the spectators was DeaflympicsGB Chef de Mission Fiona Brookes. “Lauren ran brilliantly and she was in 3rd place coming into the last bend. Even then she was carrying a foot injury and stormed through to achieve 2nd place. That is a hallmark of a true Champion".

Women's Football - Results. Day 7, Thursday 1st August. Sofia, Bulgaria

After their 2-1 victory against Germany on day 5, the Womens Football squad were riding high on confidence as they went into their Semi Final match vs the competition favourites, USA.

The girls gave it their all, but were unable to fight back from a 4-0 half time deficit. They showed a die-hard attitude with reluctancy to give up in the second half, but still ended the game goal-less as the USA secured a 5-0 victory. Although the girls are disappointed not to reach the final, they are looking forward to the Bronze medal match against Poland on Saturday at the Bulgaria National Football Stadium.

Tennis - Results. Day 7, Thursday 1st August. Sofia, Bulgaria

A frustrating day in tennis, with Cathy Fletcher losing out in both the Womens singles and Mixed Doubles Semi Finals.

Up against number one player (Ho, TPE) in the Singles Semi-Final, Cathy put up a brave and competitive fight whilst carrying multiple injuries. Although Cathy struck the ball very well, she was unable to defeat Ho, eventually taking a 6:0 6:2 loss.

After just 90min rest, Cathy was at it again with Doubles partner Lewis, challenging the number 1 competitor.  While the first set was tight, the Germans eventually broke the British pair in their final service game to win 6-4. The match was convincingly sealed in the second set as the Fletchers lost by 6 games to 1.

Cathy is now preparing for today's Bronze medal playoffs in Women's Doubles where she will be partnered by Bethany Brookes as they face the top seeded Germans.

Karate - Results. Day 7, Thursday 1st August. Sofia, Bulgaria

David Grants quest for a Deaflympic medal ended in today's Quarter final Men's Open Kumite. 

He will now look to adjust his traditional style of competing, after he was disqualified on day 6 of Sofia2013 when the officials judged that his technique was unsafe.
