Work-Related Resilience: Deaf Professionals’ Perspectives

The purpose of the study was to analyze four main risk factors, specifically inequalities for Deaf professionals. The four factors are (a) audism and linguistism; (b) networking challenges; (c) working harder than hearing peers; and, (d) promotion limitations. There were ten Deaf professionals in New York, chosen on a first-come-first-serve basis, to interview about their perspectives on resilience in the workplace and protective factors that affect their career growth. It was made sure to have Deaf individuals from various ethnic, educational, and familial backgrounds. It was found that the Deaf community provided more (a) social support; (b) role models; and, (c) “Deaf can” optimism, so tha countered the risk factors.

GOAL: As a result of this #deaftalent campaign, the world will have a much more better understanding of the deaf community’s standpoint on not allowing deaf roles to be given out to hearing people. Many people do not realize that they have been oppressing deaf actors for many years now. I hope that this new awareness will also create many more job opportunities for deaf people all over, both in front and behind the camera, and in other places, as well. I believe that this campaign will invoke many new discussions and ideas and help cause a shift in awareness.

Many have currently spoken up for #deaftalent.
