I really really want a season three of In The Flesh because I really really want to see Dean’s character development.

Like, I know that seems silly because he’s such a minor character but he’s a really interesting minor character. His position is fascinating.

He’s probably grown up with Gary pulling him from place to place, or generally just following those with more power/ambition because it’s easier. But it’s also pretty obvious that he’s quite compassionate and can think for himself.

He probably joined the HVF because that’s what every other guy his age was doing. But in season 1 he’s the first to agree not to kill the rabids and to bring them to the treatment centre instead. In season 2, he’s still friends with Gary, still part of the Roarton Protection Services, still working for the Give Back Scheme. But he’s got a business with Freddie Preston, gives Gary the cold shoulder or pissed looks for treating PDS people badly, is reluctant to bring Kieren in front of the committee and obviously believes he’s innocent, he’s the one who stops Maxine mid-rant. But at the end of 2.06, we also see him buying Gary a pint (probably out of pity because Gary looks comically miserable) and then going off to do his own thing in another corner.

I just think Dean is super interesting. I think he’s sort of metaphorically edging his toe into the waters of opposing the popular opinion. I think he’s a very fair and kind-hearted person but he’s used to keeping his mouth closed so that he’ll be part of the popular group. But by the end of season 2 I think he’s starting to unlearn that. I think he’s starting to realize that it’s okay if he’s supportive and accepting of PDS sufferers

I want a third season because I think he could become a good friend to Jem and/or the Walker family (plus Simon, maybe) in general. He’s obviously a pretty gentle, well-meaning person who sees Jem as maybe something of a younger sister.

I dunno, for some reason I just really care about Dean Halton and I want to see him grow in season 3.

You know who else's character development I'm pissed we won't get to see? Dean. I feel like he could have gone the same road as Philip and started to realize that persecuting PDS sufferers was wrong. It seemed that he was already starting to change his view when the series ended. I never saw him as a malicious character like Bill or Gary, but more of an ignorant one who could be changed. More of a follower than an instigator of cruelty. Possibly, he could have seen the effect of Amy's death on Philip -not that he was the only one effected, but it feels like he had more of connection to Philip than to the others- and realized that these weren't just soulless monsters, but capable of making emotional connections and forming bonds, and it caused pain not only to them but to those who cared about them when they were persecuted or killed.
