Hawks Acquire DeAndre Liggins; Subsequently Waive Him
On September 25th, 2017, the Los Angeles Clippers traded guard-forward DeAndre Liggins and $100,000 in cash considerations to the Atlanta Hawks for a top-55 protected 2018 second round draft pick. (Pick did not convey).
DeAndre Liggins became a member of the Los Angeles Clippers after he was dealt by the Houston Rockets in the 2017 blockbuster eight-player trade that saw Chris Paul head to Houston. Liggins never played a game for the Clippers as he was dealt nearly two months after the original Rockets and Clippers deal.
The move to deal Liggins was made for several reasons. Coming into 2017 training camp, the Clippers had 20 players on their roster with Liggins. Trading Liggins’ salary — the guard was owed a guaranteed $26,000 for the 2017-18 season — to the Hawks created a $1.67 million trade exception. The transaction also allowed the Clippers to fall $122,000 below the luxury tax line.
The Hawks waived Liggins shortly after the trade. The 2018 pick in the trade was top-55 protected. Atlanta’s second rounder ended up in the 34th spot of the draft and never conveyed to Los Angeles. The Clippers never used the $1.67 million trade exception they created via the trade.
DeAndre Liggins. AP The Phoenix Fuel Masters have failed to seal a deal with DeAndre Liggins and thus remain without a regular import for the PBA Governors Cup that fires off on July 15. “We still don’t have an import as Liggins said ‘no,’” said new Phoenix coach Ariel Vanguardia on their failed bid to bring over to their camp the three-year NBA veteran from Kentucky U. But even as they are still in search of a regular import with a height cap of 6-foot-5, the Fuel Masters have started training under Vanguardia. Already in town and having reported to the Phoenix camp is Asian import Lee Kwan Hee from Korea. Lee, mainstay of the Samsung Thunders in the KBL, is reinforcing a Phoenix team with a new coach and several new players in their second conference in local pro play. Debuting in Phoenix uniform in the coming tourney are Mark Cruz, Norbert Torres, Simon Enciso, Prince Caperal, Jonathan Uyloan, Mark Borboran and John Wilson. Wilson was the Jose Rizal U Heavy Bombers’ main man in the NCAA under Vanguardia. The Fuel Masters had an auspicious PBA debut versus the NLEX Road Warriors on Feb. 17 but then limped to a woeful 3-8 finish in the Commissioner’s Cup under coach Koy Banal.
