The Hollies - Dear Eloise
The Hollies “Dear Eloise” It’s 4am and this song is stuck in my head for some reason. I’ve always loved the 1971 Epic greatest hits album by The Hollies so that is the one LP of theirs I have, though my dad had nice, mint mono copies of “StopStopStop” and “King Midas in Reverse”. I knew I’d sold them years ago when my dad gave me his vinyl to sell and I’m kinda bummed I don’t have “King Midas…” If I’d have known he was gonna croak only a few years after he gave me his wax to sell I’d have hung on to few extra pieces for sentimental sake. The only solace I get is knowing I sold this album for $40 and the ither for $25 and that stuff tickled my dad so much, as he bought so many of his LP’s from the cut out bin for under a buck when he was in college. So I’ve got that, at least.
“Song for Her”. Dear Eloise. Beauty in Strangers (Maybe Mars, 2011).
Dear Eloise is a Chinese noise pop band that consists of husband-and-wife duo Yang Haisong and Sun Xia. Quietly releasing music on the Beijing independent record label Maybe Mars since 2007, Dear Eloise are a little-known, yet beloved presence in the Chinese indie music scene, whose mystery is further heightened by the fact that they have never performed live.
Dear Eloise’s sound is melodic and sweet, backed by shoegaze-like noisy guitars and feedback. Their lyrics are simple and earnest, conjuring impressions of blissful memories of times past, while also reaching towards the uncertainty of the future. Their music has been described as “like a fading cigarette end or a scar haunting, tragic, and redeeming.”
Dear Eloise, I think there might be a change very soon. In our lives, in our time management skills, in the quantity of the hugs we receive, in the love we give away... It's like it's almost here, but not quite. Can you feel it? The sensation passing through your fingertips, the excitement every time you see it? You're daydreaming way too much but I don't mind that. Let your mind wonder, let your lips smile wider 'cause you deserve to be happy, you deserve to be loved. To be kissed, to be asked, to be treated right. Don't be scared. You'll never know if you don't try... Just breathe, I.
