i agree with you so much on the got thing, it's sooo improbable that there has been literally no progress at all. like is there a postal system beyond ravens??? the maesters, how much of their medicine has actually been developed and how much is just "well this guy figured this treatment kinda and he thought of it five hundred years ago, guess i should just stick with that"?? and all of the grossness towards sex workers, is there no one wanting any change?!?!! i really don't understand lmao x

We know GRRM is a history geek so he parallels things but even with the dragons and ice monsters it is a fundamental human aspect to want to advance and better yourselves and it’s so unlikely that no one would want to invent or change? the closest we’ve seen to an inventor is qyburn who is shamed because he’s nuts
as for the postal system i think it’s trying to imply magic isn’t as helpful because there is no push for advancement? (much like harry potter) but idk IDK like how could you survive 3000+ years of winter and famine and war with little to no science and medicine??? like the middle ages was was 500-1000 years and it was falling apart so badly by the end it took a plague to get us out of it (much like greyscale IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT)
also is essos and the other free cities supposed to be more advanced because they have companies like the faceless men for hire and banks and don’t work off of feudal systems so maybe they’re the equivalent of the muslim/persian empires?
either way westeros is fucked basically and the free cities kick ass
