You can control what you do and say. You can’t control what others do and say.

Someone will always have more money than you. Others will have less. Someone will always have more friends than you. Others will have less. Envy and guilt will get you nowhere. Leave them behind. Focus on kindness and generosity instead.

I tell my kids...think of yourself like a captain, and you've got this little boat. And sometimes the weather's good, and you're just sailing, and sometimes big storms hit, and you know, you're in a stormy sea, but just ride it out, ride it out. Because it's good to be alive.

Dear Daughters

Educationally and spiritually, the best thing you can do as a young person is leave town for awhile. You can’t appreciate your home place until you leave and come back to it with new eyes.

Your skin color gives you privilege you haven’t earned and don’t deserve. Throughout your life, look inside yourself and interrogate your biases. Do your research. Learn about the history of race in this country. Stand up against injustice when you see it. Be an ally.

1. Becoming a mother is a choice.

2. Do not take this choice lightly (or flippantly, women have been fighting for this choice throughout history).

3. Before you decide to become a mother, read The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan and Motherhood by Sheila Heti.

You cannot open your mind if you do not push your body.

You cannot push your body if you do not open your mind.

You cannot expand your soul if you do not push your body and open your mind.

Do you understand? The mind, body and soul are separate. But they are inextricable.
