Death is Dramatic

“Does this mean I’m going to die?” The words appeared in a caption at the bottom of the monitor a split second after they came through the speakers. Sai looked at the cameras that the AI identified as its eyes.
“I’m not going to kill you.” Sai held up a small device. He’d designed it to have the capacity for something like this and hopefully for both their sakes it had what he needed. “I’m going to transfer you into a temporary body and then into a new body of your choosing after that.”
There was silence and the screen was blank. He didn’t think he’d scared it off. The AI was the whole building after all, he was only using this terminal for his piece of mind. He waited. The air circulation was still on so far, but the doors were locked and the people behind them were locked in. It had only been a couple of hours, hopefully they would be alright. Hopefully no one needed medications or something like that. Patience. He would have patience.
“I don’t want to die.” The AI sounded scared. Sai set a hand on its monitor, mostly as a comforting gesture to himself. The AI seemed comforted.
“You won’t die.” Sai leaned close to the camera. “I will not let the people in this building die, but I won’t kill you either. You have a choice.”
Silence again, except for the air purifiers. Sai rechecked the details of the AI, rechecked the device and checked them against each other. Plenty of space for the AI with plenty to spare. There was a soft beep. The air was shutting down. Sai took slow breaths. He would not panic here, even though he knew everyone trapped would be panicking. He did not have a lot of time.
“There! Now what will you do Mr. Kitsuragi? One of us is going to die now aren’t we? You need air and I don’t. I don’t need anything or any of you stupid meat bags! You always say ‘it’s okay, you won’t die’ and ‘you’ll be fine Ai-chan, just a short procedure’ and then I wake up and I’m somebody else, or I’m something else and I just want you to leave me alone!” Feedback screeched around the room. The computer was railing against his grandfather, not him. It truly didn’t understand. The screeching subsided.
“So this is the choice you’ve made.” Sai shoved the device into the port beneath the main terminal. It would take time to move the AI and it would need therapy, but he would make sure it got the help it needed. He began manual overrides for the building as the program moved onto the device. There was silence as the air purifiers turned back on and the doors unlocked.
