Emily could barely keep her eyes on the man in front of her. Her focus shifted at every little noise, every movement. And being in a police station, there was a lot of that. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of the blanket that had been wrapped around her shoulders. She couldn’t tell how long she’d been here. Minutes, hours, days, any one of those she would’ve believed. But they’d moved her again, to a new room, a new person to talk to.
Time wasn’t working right in her mind - instead filled with the noise of a gunshot, footsteps running, then sirens, all on repeat. The twenty year old had been coming home from the library when it had happened. Emily usually wasn’t out so late on her own, but she’d wanted to finish up an assignment. Her house was only a few blocks away, but her path had taken her by an alley where she’d been unfortunate enough to witness a fight. What started out as arguing lead to shouting and then the fatal gunshot. She had watched the man fall to the ground, bleeding out with his eyes already glassed over. In shock, she had frozen, and it seemed now, she was still in much the same state.
“I....” She started, looking at the man. But she couldn’t finish, shaking her head instead as her gaze turned down. “I don’t remember,” she finally answered, no longer even sure what he’d asked in the first place. “I’m sorry.” The words came as nearly a whisper. Emily was soon shaking her head again, eyes squeezed shut. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
