whenever i start doing translations again i get so wrapped up in questions of convention... i think on the whole the trend has become to sacrifice tone, vibe, style, etc., in favor of communicating content, possibly due to crunch (you can't really care about this stuff if you're doing it on the most aggressive deadlines, and sometimes to capture a piece's spirit you have to get a little weird with form and content in the target language, which doesn't sell). but trends with localization seem to be going in the complete opposite direction, at least for the cases with which i'm familiar -- just the wholesale rewriting or omission of things that a translation team has decided their audience wouldn't like. i'd really like to peek into those rooms and see how they make such decisions.
