"“I’ve always subscribed to the belief that fashion is wearable art—so this year’s theme feels near to me,” Poonawalla tells Town & Country. “The intersection of fashion and art is storytelling, and I love pushing boundaries with what I wear, even when some would argue against its practicality. My personal style is like expressionism; it’s unique to who I am, and tonight feels like the perfect way to allow each person to share part of who they are with the world through such a shared medium.” Tonight, she is wearing an orchid crafted by sculptor Mark Quinn over a Dolce & Gabbana Alta Moda dress. “The thought of wearing an actual sculpture was so exciting to me,” she says. “To be able to work with Marc on this concept felt inspiring and unique—layering art and fashion—symbolic to tonight’s theme felt right immediately.” The outfit was a long time coming. Poonawalla explains, “I had been at Marc’s gallery for dinner when I first saw the orchid; it was in chrome. It stuck with me, and I had thoughts about The Met, but I knew very early on that I wanted to wear white, a subtle nod to peace, as we are all aware times are exceptionally challenging right now. In divisive times, reminding one another of the human spirit and brilliance is so important—Marc’s work exemplifies that. Peace is often found in the joy of other’s creations and the blending of cultures. This project felt emblematic of that." Poonawalla is specifically wearing a white phalaenopsis orchid, also known as a moth orchid. “I see the Orchid Pectoral as a piece of fashion inspired by my artwork,” Mark Quinn says. “In this iteration, it only exists with its meaning activated when Natasha wears it, rather than as a sculpture in its own right. What has always excited me about fashion is that, unique amongst art forms, it involves the living body and the life of the wearer. It’s a piece of art that can only exist as fashion—showing, as we know, that fashion is art.” Orchids, too, carry deeper meaning for Poonawalla. “Orchids are found globally,” she says. “They are not a regional flower—they belong to various lands—so in my mind, they have always been grounded in unity. And while they look delicate, orchids have this resilience and strength in their architecture. They have longevity and are a great example of how beauty responds to nurturement. I hope people feel a sense of awe, calm and elegance when they see it. I always want to make a room feel lighter and a bit more whimsical with my looks.”" (x)
