First Look Of PDS 70b - A Newborn Planet
Credit: ESO/A. Müller et al.
The first clear picture of a planet captured in the process of forming orbiting the dwarf star PDS 70 may be seen in this magnificent image from the SPHERE instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope.
The planet is plainly visible as a bright spot to the right of the image's blackened center, which is where the coronagraph mask was employed to conceal the star's glaring glare.
