Decadent Dinners: April 1935
The year is 1935.
Inspiration and recipes for this month's Decadent Dinner have mostly been taken from The Silent Hostess - a cookbook published by the General Electric Company in 1932, when refrigeration was deemed to be "cool".
There appear to be five staple trends for 1930's dinner party food:
1. Jelly it.
2. Present your food in a "fancy ring mold".
3. Devil it.
4. Layer it.
5. Add cream.
(If in doubt, then do all five methods).
Our starter consisted of Tomato Jelly Salad served with a Molded Chicken Salad decorated with radish roses. These were both pretty revolting, and unless you like aspic/savory jelly (jello for those US readers) then I'd give this a miss.
For main course I served a Deviled Meatloaf with creamed cauliflower and twice baked potatoes. This was like an edible brick weight in the stomach.
Pudding was "pineapple Surprise" - a mixture of tinned crushed pineapple, marshmellows, macaroons, dates and whipped cream - all chilled to set in your (GE) refrigerator. Here's a similar recipe I found online: Pineapple Surprise.
I can honestly say this was some of the most interesting and yet revolting food I have ever cooked.
Well done guests.
Decadent Dinners: March 1922
The year is 1922.
We are dining from a menu inspired by The Great Gatsby to a soundtrack provided courtesy of the very amazing 1920s radio network.
Tonight we are serving:
Pastry Pigs served with a Dijon Mustard & honey dip
Spiced roasted ham served with Harlequin salads
Lemon cake
All washed down with gin rickeys.
Be my Guest.
