December 2014 Daily Bookish Challenges

If you could share and recommend only one book that you've read so far in 2014, which one would it be?

This question is so difficult to answer because I've read some pretty amazing books this year. I think I'll have to settle on The Program by Suzanne Young.

This book honestly scared the crap out of me. As someone who suffers from depression the idea of a world where people who suffer from it have their memories wiped and end up forgetting people they care about is terrifying. As awful as I feel sometimes, I would never want that to happen to me. 

I think that's why I loved this book so much. Right now we live in a world where discussion about mental illness rarely happens and people want to 'quick fix' the people who suffer rather than help them through it. While I don't think it'll ever get to the extreme of memory wiping, I think that without educating people properly and opening up discussions regarding mental illness, people will continue to misunderstand what's happening with those individuals. Misunderstanding leads to misguided attempts at solutions which could result in worsening the problem rather than healing it. 

Another thing I really loved about this book was that I really connected with the characters in a way that I usually don't. While I usually end up absorbed in the book, I usually don't go on an emotional journey to the extreme that I did with this one and it was quite a fascinating experience.

Wanderlust - the intense desire to travel

Sonder - in short, the realization that everyone you meet is living a life as complex as your own

Love

I only explained my top three. The rest should be fairly straight forward. Except for existential. That one's hard to explain. 

Why did you choose these words? Would you like to see these words used more often in everyday conversation?

Words like wanderlust, adventure, and explore all related to my goal to travel the world. I love going to new places and discovering new things. 

Sonder, existential, eager, and learn, at least for me, are all related to the idea of constantly thinking and growing and gathering new knowledge and making new discoveries. I love to learn. I want to learn everything I can about anything I can. 

Balter is just a fun word; the idea of carefree dancing sounds fun.

Finally, trust and love. Two words that are quite powerful, though they mean something different to everyone. Words that have different meaning to different people fascinate me.

What are your top ten favourite words?

Oh god, that's going to be difficult

flabbergasted and gobsmacked because they perfectly describe the kind of open mouthed astonishment in just one word

peckish, because I've been looking for a word to describe the not-quite-hungry-but-want-to-eat-something feeling for years

Vorfreude -- a German word to describe the pleasure of anticipating something nice. You're happy already because you know it's coming. As far as I know there is no proper translation into English

aluminium, because it looks funny when written in cursive

cocoa -- which is Kakao in German, with the vocals switched around. I like that

Handarbeit, the German word for crafts -- it contains 'Hand' which is the same as in English 'hand', and 'Arbeit' which means 'work'. So it implies that it is work (something that takes effort) done with your hands. It can be used to argue against people who claim 'it's just for girls' -- because boys have hands too -- and to contradict people who think they don't have to pay for the time that goes into handmade things.

If you liked 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry, you should try 'Delirium' by Lauren Oliver.

One of the books I read this year that I fell in love with was Delirium by Lauren Oliver and I think it's because it reminded me so much of The Giver by Lois Lowry which is one of my all time favourite books. 

The worlds that these books take place in are very similar in their controlled structure and emotionless citizens. In both worlds, citizens have very little choice or control over how their lives are going to run. Citizens in both worlds are not allowed to have any real emotion and people function like robots.

Both have a young protagonist who has just come-of-age in their respective worlds and are about to undergo life changing events. Throughout this process they begin to realize that what is happening in their worlds is not right and set about changing it in their own ways. 

It's difficult to really explain how amazing both of these books are without spoiling too much, so I'll leave it at that, but I highly recommend reading both if you haven't already.
