Hello, does anyone have any recommendations for comforting fantasy reads?
Things akin to Howl’s Moving Castle, Stardust, The Princess Bride, etc?
I’m particularly looking for audiobook recommendations so if you know one that plays really well as audio, I’d love the suggestions!
Tagging a lot I’m sorry I’m just really hoping to reach more people!
I don’t know how the audiobooks for these are, because I don’t do audio, but I think the books below fit the vibe you’re after. Enjoy!
Nettle and Bone by T. Kingfisher
Unnatural Magic and The Ruthless Lady’s Guide to Wizardry by C. M. Waggoner
The Dark Lord of Derkholm by Diana Wynne Jones
The Left-Handed Booksellers of London by Garth Nix
The Watchmaker of Filigree Street by Natasha Pulley
Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede
the Tiffany Aching books by Terry Pratchett
The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman
Strange Practice by Vivian Shaw
Castle Hangnail by Ursula Vernon
Spirits Abroad by Zen Cho
The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske
Totally agree with the recommendation for Spindle’s End, and most of McKinley’s other works would probably fit this vibe, particularly:
Rose Daughter
Chalice
Beauty
And definitely check out the sequels to Howl’s Moving Castle if you haven’t already:
Castle in the Air
House of Many Ways
And here are a few others that may fit the vibe you’re looking for:
The Goose Girl by Shannon Hale
Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine
Princess Academy by Shannon Hale
The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander
(I’m not sure about the audiobooks for any of these though.)
