We‘re reading In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez in my English class and honestly it astounds me how I’ve never heard of the Mirabal Sisters before when they’ve done so much. And as per usual, as soon as I admire someone or something, I have to draw them.

They are physically gone, but their legacy will last for Eternity. This watercolor painting I did is in honor of the last butterfly "Dedé Mirabal"and her take off 01/02/2014, after 54 years they are together in heaven. Dedé was the last living member of the Mirabal sisters. Four sisters, Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa and Dede Mirabal had the courage to stand up to Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo. The death of the Mirabal sisters marked the modern history of the Dominican Republic. In turn, the ideals of those who died have been an example and inspiration to the world.
Rest in power Dedé Mirabal (3/1/1925 - 2/1/2014)
Dedé was the last living member of the MIrabal sisters. Four sisters, Patria, Minerva, Maria Teresa and Dede Mirabal had the courage to stand up to Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo, who ruled the country from 1930 to 1938 and from 1942 to 1952. They distributed pamphlets about Trujillo’s numerous victims and engaged in other activities against the oppressive regime.
The sisters were arrested and imprisoned frequently, but they refused to back down. Finally on Nov. 25, 1960, Patria, 36, Minerva, 34, and Maria Teresa, 25, along with their driver, were clubbed to death by Trujillo’s men. Trujillo himself was assassinated just six months later.
The Mirabal sisters became international heroines for their work for democracy. That’s why so many locals were saddened Saturday when they learned the last surviving Mirabal sister, Dede — Bélgica Adela Mirabal-Reyes — died just a month short of her 89th birthday.

Bélgica Adela Mirabal-Reyes (b. March 1, 1925)
Dede Mirabal is the second-born. She never became actively involved in the underground. She supported her sisters' ideas, but did not think it was wise to be so bold. She married Jaime Fernandez and they lived close to the house where she grew up. Jaime was also instrumental in her decision to refrain from rising against Trujillo. Dede survived her sisters and is alive today. She and her mother helped to raise Patria, Minerva, and Mate's children. She runs the museum, Museo de las Hermanas Mirabales, located on their property and tells the stories of her sisters' tirelessly. She has striven to keep their memories and spirits alive in the lives of the Dominicans.
