Thanks for answering my question, even if you're not an authority on the subject! Your blog is really nice :3
No problem! I do the best I can (and if I don’t know, I’m happy to refer to to someone/somewhere who does). :)
And thank you! I like your skateboarding snail icon. :D
I'm sorry if this seems insensitive or mean, but from the posts about the poor mis-molted mantis, I'm curious- how exactly do you go about humanely euthanizing a pet bug?
The first thing you need to know is that insects don’t really feel pain like we do. That’s why they can lose a leg and just keep going like it’s not bothering them—it’s really not.
One guy I talked to said that he actually squished his. Like… between two bricks. Personally, I couldn’t do it. I know it wouldn’t hurt them but it would hurt me and it really upsets me thinking about having to do it.
The generally accepted way is to put them in the freezer and let them freeze to death.
Another thing to do—not all that common, just from what I’ve seen in the mantis groups I’m in, but not uncommon either—is to feed them to any other predatory bugs or lizards you might have. I guess a kind of “nothing goes to waste” or “circle of life” thing. Again, I couldn’t do it, but I like it a lot better than squishing the poor little guys.
Mismolts aren’t automatically a death-sentence though, especially if they’re not adults. A missing or warped leg can get repaired or even replaced completely if the next molt goes well, depending on the damage, and mantises of all ages can be hand-fed if they’re having trouble catching prey and still live long, healthy lives. Again, this depends on the damage. No amount of hand-feeding can save a little bug whose thorax is so bent that they can’t get the food down.
i just put on my glasses and realized what i thought were your icons eyes are, in fact, its eyebrows. i have been deceived
You are certainly not the first to be deceived by Underbot's rather expressive eyebrows.
