I like to think the Deep Dark functions like Depression:

Whispers of your own failure follow you. You don't know who you are anymore. All happiness you felt for anything has vanished. There's no point in anything anymore. Maybe it would be better if the Warden caught you. You're tired, and you've just woken up.

Why did you think you could tackle this? Who are you to think that you can do what no one ever did before? Who were you in the first place?
