Do you have a voice claim for the character? What do you imagine the character sounds like?

Talav- Hmmm I don’t usually voice claim my characters because 99% of the time my internal monologue has one voice and that is the voice all my characters have.

Thinking about it, I think his voice would be relatively androgynous, and that he is generally soft spoken. He’s the kind of guy who gets icy and quiet when he’s angry.

I also think a lot more about a characters ‘voice’ in terms of their word choice… Talav is a smooth talker both in tone and word choice. He also is one for pet names, especially in Meridian when he plays up his ‘noble’ status. He’s called Aloy ‘my dear’.

Do you have any quotes tied to the character, either from the story itself or from another source that fit them?

OMG ABEL I HAVENT THOUGHT ABOUT HIM IN A WHILE.

About three quarters through the campaign, Abel gives up his armour that was the cause of his paladin oath and the reason he became an adventurer, so that he can accept a gift of better armour from an ancient elf that we were supposed to defeat, but saved instead.

When he accepts the armour, he gives up his old oath in exchange for a new one. “I have spent my whole time trying to bring back a past that will never exist again. It is gone. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t good things in the present to fight for. I let go of the past, and make a new oath: to my friends, to my family, and to making the world we have right now in the present a better place.”

It marked a turning point for his character and was also a pretty cool speech to pull out. One of the highlights of the campaign!

Have you ever made a moodboard for them?

Abel: NO BUT THAT WOULD BE SICK. It would probably have like… engraved armour, a chainsword, a big tree, butchered meat, a hand clasping someone else’s shoulder in support, a sunrise, a bloodstain, and a kneeling knight

What was the thought process behind their appearance? Did you go mostly for the aesthetic or are there other reasons they look the way they do?

Kal: Ok so you’re just calling me out here. Kal’s appearance when they’re a teen is exactly the same as mine when I was around that age, because Kal started out as a self insert. Their change in hair to the mullet is because I wanted to create a distinct signal for like. What part of the story we’re in when I draw them, as well as to make them stand out from self portraits. And also bc I saw a video of someone with that haircut and I was like that looks cool.

For their supersuit it’s mostly aesthetics… designing those things are hard. The eye symbol is totally arbitrary and in retrospect kind of insane bc it doesn’t really have anything to do with their powers. I chose orange for their palette just because I didn’t know any colour theory and it was complimentary with their skin and hair colour.

Their mask is plot relevant- well. I added it bc I thought the winter soldier looked cool and then added plot justification. It’s to release a knockout gas to take them out if they ever lose control of their powers, after they lost control mid mission once to disastrous results.

Does the character have other characters connected to them? Do you have a family tree and "offscreen" connections made up for them or do they exist in a vacuum purely for the purpose of the story?

Kal: this is an excellent question. Yes and no. Kal does have a family, but I took them out of the picture for ease of plot really early on. Their parents kick them out when they’re 15 for being trans/nonbinary. I don’t think they have any siblings, if they do, Kal never goes back to rekindle a relationship with them. They find a new family in their work, Lynn and Tony and Clint.

They do have their own rogues gallery, which is some sort of connection, most of which I’ve never introduced. But I just like coming up with supervillains and then it’s convenient to give them to Kal. There’s Morph, her main enemy and a shapeshifter. There’s the Undertaker, who is every villain’s contact for disposing of bodies and therefore a frequent target of information gathering. And then there’s another one who doesn’t have a name, who is basically just really good at masterminding schemes and coordinating villain team ups so they get along.
