a thing I just wrote bc what is sleep. Sorry for no readmore, mobile is a killer. -------------- Winter mornings were always the hardest. His joints creaked with the cold, his muscles ached, the faint memory of warm summer sunshine deep in his bones. A groan, from him, from the bed, the crackle pop of his back and elbows, a soft sigh, and he was sitting upright. Where was he again…? Still in a dream, or awake? The cold of the floor on his feet told him he was awake. No longer sleeping. He picked his glasses up from the side table. The world became clear as he slid them on, and he squinted at the window to gauge the time. Midmorning. He had slept in. That was alright, he had plenty of day left. - Afternoon slipped by like a cat curling around someone’s ankles, sleek and soft and then padding away to find something new. He didn’t mind. Today was meant to pass by. Warm tea by the living room window, breath leaving a fog on the glass as he watched the snow outside fall. Serene. Gentle. A beautiful day. But his bones ached. The layers he wore to stay warm. Fleece under robe under blanket. It would be alright. The cold never lasts forever. He sipped his tea, letting the warmth blossom in his belly. - Dreams never come easy. Not on nights like this. On nights like this, with the moon overhead and the world white and silent. On nights like this, the dreams lag behind him. Like weary dogs after a hard day of play. But he runs. He runs and his soul threatens to tear his flesh from his aching bones. To pull him asunder and leave him for the night to claim. Slowly, so slowly he doesn't hardly feel it, the ache leaves his bones. He feels the warmth of a summer’s day, a feeling like the sun, blossoming warmth like his tea, but more. Spreading through his veins, to his arms and legs. He is Alive again. And he runs. The only sound in the silent white night are his feet in the snow and his panting breaths. He is burning. - Morning comes again. Aching bones and cracking joints and cold floors. But the memory of summer, a dream in the cold morning. On a chair in the corner, an animal skin cloak. On the hook on his door a soft robe. A gentle hand on the cloak, before he goes about his day, waiting for his dreams again.
