Esmail, an Emirati who walked up to me as I was eating at Deerfields Mall, a shopping center in Abu Dhabi’s rural Shahama city, and asked if he could practice his English with me.
“My friend, where are you from?”
“Orlando, Florida. By Disney.”
“Disney? I do not know this city.”
“It’s an entertainment company with a theme park. You know, Mickey Mouse? Frozen? The Avengers movies?”
“Ah, sorry. I don’t know. I do not watch western films. I am too busy with engineering class and praying. My religion teaches me these films are haram. You know haram? Forbidden. I do not know why my country allows these films. Maybe just for tourists. And it is good for tourists, but not for me. My country should be like Saudi Arabia. It does not have these films. Only good ones.”
“So are you wahhabi [the dominant sect of Islam in Saudi Arabia] then?”
“Ach, no. Salafi. Wahhabi is too much.”
