Sensors for Defense and Military Applications
The concept of battlefield and military operations has changed significantly over the years due to technological revolutions. There is a wide range of support provided by sensor technologies. It is from simple sensors to AI-based tools for real-time intelligence sharing and decision support. From soldiers on the ground to combat pilots, sensors are making their relevance in various military applications. Sensors have a huge potential and they help further for defense and military applications.
Battlefield
battlefield surveillance systems use sensors. You can deploy sensors on land, aerial platforms, in space and underwater. This helps to keep a 24×7 watch over a particular targeted zone.
The Remotely Monitorer Battlefield Sensor System (REMBASS) and Improved REMBASS (I-REMBASS) contain passive sensors. The sensors are normally in an idle mode with very low power dissipation. The sensors note a change in the ambient energy level. Sensors are activated if a target comes into detection range. The ambient energy level refers to seismic/acoustic, thermal, and/or magnetic.
The sensors identify the target (as a person or a tracked or wheeled vehicle). Then, format this information into short digital messages. And then, transmit the messages to a monitoring device (either the SMS, the PMS or M/P). Monitoring device decodes and display the information which shows target classification and direction of travel. The sensors send a test message on initial power-up to verify operational status. The repeaters send periodic test messages. Operator calculations are based on the sensor data. And they help in the determination of target location, speed, the direction of travel, and the number of targets.
Missile system
Sensors for Defense and Military Applications
The electronic circuitry including various sensors is a critical part of the missile system. For example, Bloodhound missile was a relatively advanced missile for its era (the Cold War).
It is with an advanced continuous-wave semi-active radar homing system, offering excellent performance against electronic countermeasures and fire control. With sensory systems, now the missiles are much more sophisticated, powerful and accurate as compared to traditional ones.
Smart camera sensors
Viooa Imaging Technology has been producing smart camera sensors for use in various military applications. They were especially for unmanned platforms including air, ground, and sea. Extreme indoor and outdoor harsh environments use this to get one or multiple points of interest from different directions.
Wearable sensors
Portable and wearables devices are most desirable for soldiers. Hence, there has been a growing trend of wearable technologies for wider military applications. These devices are embedded in clothing and accessories that can comfortably be worn on the body. Wearable technology is not about style or fashion. It is more about the smart use of technologies to assist soldiers and military operations.
Sensors for Defense and Military Applications
Wearable devices with small and smart sensors provide better connectivity. They also enable easy and real-time transfer of data, images, audios and videos. They can enhance the sensing capability, artificial intelligence (AI)-based solutions, cognitive abilities and augmented reality (AR).
Wearable devices help to track the soldiers during high alert operations. This helps in ensuring the safety of each soldier and the troop.
