57. Our muses are destined to find each other when they’re both lost and scared

The blond child hugged himself tightly as he made his way over the still-warm desert sands. Caliburn thumped against his weary, aching back with each step, and a cool desert breeze blew grits and grains of sand into his face. Why oh why hadn't he accepted that caravan's offer? Now he would never make it to the oasis city before tomorrow. He had water, but that didn't help much. At least in a forest, one would hear the chirps and rustles of animal life. Here there was no sound but the winds blowing across the expanse.

"...I'm cold," he murmured aloud, tasting the dry, cool air. "Caliburn, how much further is it to the city?"

Far. Too far for you to make tonight. This place is mixing me up for some reason, I think all the sand in the air is messing up my sense of direction. It would be best if you were to find a place to rest for the night, so that you can save your energy. It will be easier for me to find our way in the daytime.

"Okay..." Arthur sighed and went on, looking for a sufficient place to rest. He found one in the way of a large, craggy rock with a small hole at the base. There, that would serve as a good place for the night. "Too bad we don't have any wood," he mumbled. "A fire would be nice right about now." He hated the feeling of not knowing where he was, it was sort of scary. He sighed and got down on his knees, ready to crawl into the place. A sharp whimper stopped him, and he quickly looked up. "Hello? Is someone in there?"

"...Who're ya'?" It was a girl's voice that spoke. Though he knew well what had happened to the cat, he peered in, looking into the gloom by the light of the full, desert moon. There was a girl in there, one with fiery red hair and a suspicious look on her face. He could see something sharp and shiny in her hands, a sword. Like him, he thought. "I asked who ya' are."

"...Arthur," he responded simply. "I got lost out here in the desert, I thought this would be a good place to stay for the night. Sorry, I didn't know you had already taken it." He looked at her, thin and distrusting, like he had been that one time... "...Are you lost too?"

"What if I am?" she growled. "Ya' gonna' try somethin'?"

"No, just wanted to know." Another cool breeze made him shiver, reminding him that he needed shelter for the night, and there weren't many options for it in this place. "...I know it's sort of sudden... but do you think I could stay here with you, just for the night? It's really cold outside, and there aren't a lot of other places I could go."

"..." She looked at him suspiciously, giving him a fierce stare with those shining amethyst eyes. After a bit, though, she sighed and scooted back a bit in her little shelter. "Jus' don't crowd me when ya' come in."

"Thank you." He got onto his hands and knees, then carefully maneuvered his way into the shelter, with some difficulty thanks to Caliburn being strapped to his back. When he managed to get in, she hadn't moved much, and was right next to him. "...It's pretty cold outside, isn't it?"

"Yeah," she answered quietly, looking away from him. "Dark, too."

"It is." He pulled his back from off of his back, then managed to extract his blanket out of it. There, that ought to keep off the desert chill. "Um, if you'd like, we could share my blanket. It's pretty warm, and it would probably be nice with two people keeping it warm."

"...Sure." The redheaded girl scooted closer, then helped him spread the blanket over the two of them. This was much better, warmer than the night desert chill had been. "Better," he heard her mumble, echoing his own thoughts. There was silence between the two children, until she spoke. "So, ya' got lost, like me?"

"Yes. I lost my way while I was walking, it was pretty scary. What about you? Were you scared, being lost?"

"Eh... sort of, I guess, but it happens a lot, so I oughta be used to it, I guess." By the way she clung to him, though, likewise to how he clung to her, signified she was more than just 'sort of' scared. "...And you? Ya still scared?"

"...No. Not anymore."
