Silicone degassing in action. Look how all the bubbles are drawn out of the liquid! My chamber gets down to about 27 inches as it has a small leak somewhere. But I left it running for 90 seconds after it reached that point. After the silicone had cured and I took it out of the mould I found not a single bubble anywhere- a perfect cast. My home-made storage-jar vacuum chamber really makes a big difference!

When making the face flesh I found that if I just mixed and poured the silicone the end result was full of bubbles, so to get bubble-free casting I needed to degas the silicone before pouring it into the mould. To do this I need a vacuum chamber. I would only need it a few times and I certainly couldn’t justify spending £2500 on a professional one. So I made one! I’ve used a compressor from a scrap fridge and a thick glass storage jar from The Range. A few parts were needed from the air and hydraulic hose shop. Total cost- £28! Instead of putting my mixture in a separate container and putting it in the chamber I just poured it straight into the chamber itself! At £3.49 I’m not too worried if I make it messy, and this way I could watch the degassing with interest through the glass sides. See next post for video.

If you are going to do something similar make sure your chamber is rounded all over- flat sides will implode like a bomb. This jar is cylindrical with rounded top and bottom which is ideal. Test it outside and operate it from the far end of an extension lead just in case it goes bang!

Nyiragongo volcano

The upper image, taken by the Advanced Land Imager on NASA’s Earth-Observing 1 satellite shows Nyiragongo volcano near the border between the African nations of Rwanda and the Congo. It sits in the African rift zone and is one of the most active volcanoes in the area, regularly forming lava lakes. The lower images show the Alaskan volcano Veniamanof, described in this recent post.

Compared to the image of Veniamanof, the Nyiragongo cloud looks different; the cloud coming out of this volcano is mostly gases such as steam that were dissolved in the magma, whereas the plumes from Veniamanof contained both steam and ash because that volcano is more explosive. The gases from Nyiragongo are departing the volcano but they’re coming out easily because the magma is lower viscosity (effectively less sticky).

Simply from satellite imagery you can gain information on the type of eruption going on, how dangerous it is, and even what type of rock is involved.
