The final 5 arrived! 🌸 . The last of our WC Degus have arrived here at SCC! . We are happy to have them join us finally - it has been quite the rescue project and sadly, we had to say goodbye to 5 of the boys due to health issues (we will be sharing that story shortly). . On Tuesday evening, we took a little road trip to Fochville to fetch these goos from Brenda, who had volunteered to transport them up for us. We were happy that after a long 15 hour drive, they arrived safely. ❤️ Thank you Brenda! . For those who haven't followed the story, 22 degus were rescued in Cape Town from a breeder who was selling them as snake food. As degus are not a permitted animal in the Western Cape, arrangements were made to have them transported to SCC. The females arrived first, a few weeks ago now. Two of those females have since been adopted and are living the most amazing life! We had a tough time trying to have the remainder of the colony transported to JHB, sadly 5 caught an unknown viral infection and after intensive treatment, they succumbed to the infection and we lost those 5 boys 😔 . These 4 males and 1 female have been placed in quarantined for a short period of two weeks, there after they will be integrated them into our current colonies. . The female will hopefully return to being with her sisters, as long as their bond has not yet been broken. The males will remain separated from other groups until we can determine if they can be integrated with other males already at our rescue and sanctuary. 😊 . A huge shout out to Kerri and Talia from Boggle And Brux for stepping in and obtaining these degus before they suffered a terrible fate.
